Athletics, considered the queen of sports, is in many ways the embodiment of the Olympic motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius", which means faster, higher, stronger. WITHthe ancient Olympics Olympics started with mere walking races, only rarely did the competitors wear armor or equipment that complicated their movement. Today, athletics is one of the most popular sports at the Olympics, from a 100-meter run to a 42 km marathon, from a hammer throw to a high jump.

There are currently a total of 24 disciplines. Track disciplines: sprints (100 m, 200 m, 400 m), medium distance runs (800 m, 1500 m) and long distance runs (5 m, 000 m), obstacle course (10 m and 000 m women, 100 m and 400 m men), relays (110 x 400 m and 4 x 100 m) and 4 m hurdles. Women and men compete in long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus throw, javelin throw and hammer throw, marathon and walking. The heptathlon and decathlon competitions are spread over two days and the points deciding on the result depend on the performance values in the individual disciplines.

Races in walking, as well as in marathon running, will take place in Sapporo, approx. 800km from Tokyo.
